ROHS Directive (2002/95/EC)

To WECO´s Customers,

WECO has made extensive progress in complying with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (RoHS) Directive 2002/95/EC.

The RoHS directive stipulates that lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated diphenyl ether and polybrominated biphenyls will be banned from new electrical and electronic equipment as of July 1st, 2006.

By eliminating these substances from new equipment the RoHS directive complements the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive 2002/96/EC. The WEEE directive includes substances most of which are not used in electrical connectors.

The maximum concentration values in homogenous materials do not exceed 0.1% for lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), hexavalent chromium (Cr VI), and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) and polybrominated biphenyls (PBB)including decaBDE and 0.01% cadmium (Cd) by weight. Lead (Pb) contained does not exceed the exemption no.6 which allows lead (Pb) as an alloying element in steel containing up to 0.35% lead (Pb) by weight, aluminium containing up to 0.4% lead (Pb) by weight and as a copper alloy containing up to 4% lead (Pb) by weight.DecaBDE are not used so the decaBDE exemption no. 10 annulment has no effect upon WECO product.

Most of WECO´s products are now available with RoHS compliance. First-in-first-out inventory conditions and the returned goods are subject to WECO´s management policies. On a case-by-case basis almost any product is quickly available compliant to RoHS.

WECO has a four-pronged approach to identify if a product is RoHS compliant

  • An email by your WECO Internal Sales or Customer Service Representative.

  • A Certificate of Compliance by WECO´s Quality Manager or Reliability Engineer.

  • The WECO product label can have a RoHS/WEEE/Pb-free logo.

  • www.weco.ca product specification pages can have the RoHS/WEEE/Pb-free logo.

Reflow soldered and wave soldered goods may be exposed to higher short term processing temperatures in some lead-free (for example the Sn, Ag & Cu) soldering processes. This is especially important for reflow product. Temperature issues do not affect panel, chassis and rail-mounted devices that do not undergo soldering.

WECO´s RoHS products are backwards compatible with the tin/lead (Sn/Pb) soldering processes. They will not contaminate the process nor weaken the solder joints in any way.

WECO has an active RoHS implementation committee. Its members include Quality, Reliability, Manufacturing, Sales, Engineering, Planning and Procurement Management.

The Restriction on Perflouroctane Sulfonates RPFOS 2006/122/EC banning perflouroctane sulfonates (PFOS) equal or above 0.005% concentration as a preparation, 0.1 % homogenous in semi-finished or 1 um per square meter of the coated material is also met.

    Best regards,
    Mike Hodak, CQE, P. Eng.
